I try to explain these terms because I saw them in a job description.
Microsoft System Center: SCCM, SCOM and Orchestrator
Microsoft System Center is an enterprise management suite designed to help IT administrators manage, deploy, monitor, and configure IT infrastructure.
SCCM (System Center Configuration Manager) is the former name of Configuration Manager, an endpoint management solution used to deploy software, manage device configurations, and maintain the lifecycle of managed computers. It is now commonly associated with Microsoft Configuration Manager and the broader Microsoft Intune management ecosystem.
SCOM (System Center Operations Manager) monitors infrastructure health, service availability, and performance across servers, applications, and other IT components.
Orchestrator (SCORCH) provides workflow automation by connecting tasks and integrating operations across different IT systems.
These are three components of the Microsoft System Center family. Configuration Manager focuses on endpoint management and software deployment. SCOM handles infrastructure monitoring and performance analysis. Orchestrator automates operational workflows and integrates tasks across systems.
SolarWinds SAM/VMAN
SolarWinds SAM (Server & Application Monitor) monitors the health, availability, and performance of servers and applications. It supports Windows and Linux environments and provides monitoring capabilities for technologies such as SQL Server, Active Directory, IIS, Exchange, web servers, and custom applications.
SolarWinds VMAN (Virtualization Manager) provides performance monitoring, capacity planning, and optimization for virtualized environments, including VMware vSphere/ESXi, Microsoft Hyper-V, and Nutanix AHV. Supported integrations and capabilities depend on the product version.
Veeam Backup & Replication
Veeam Backup & Replication is a data protection platform for backing up, restoring, and replicating virtual machines and other supported workloads.
It supports various enterprise environments, including VMware vSphere/ESXi and Microsoft Hyper-V. Support for Nutanix AHV, Proxmox VE, physical servers, and cloud workloads depends on the relevant Veeam product and version.
Agentless backup is available for many virtualized workloads, allowing backups to be performed without installing an agent inside every virtual machine.
NetApp and Pure Storage
NetApp provides enterprise storage systems and data management software for NAS, SAN, and unified storage architectures. Its flagship operating system, ONTAP, supports on-premises storage infrastructure and cloud-based deployments.
Pure Storage provides enterprise storage solutions, including all-flash storage arrays and software-defined storage capabilities. Its platform focuses on storage performance, data management, operational efficiency, and non-disruptive upgrades across supported hardware and services.
Cohesity
Cohesity provides enterprise data protection, backup and recovery, cyber resilience, and data security solutions. Its platform helps organizations protect and manage data across on-premises infrastructure and cloud environments.
Microsoft Certificate Authority
Microsoft Certificate Authority (CA) commonly refers to a certification authority implemented using Active Directory Certificate Services (AD CS).
AD CS is a Windows Server role that enables an organization to operate its own Public Key Infrastructure (PKI). A CA issues and manages digital certificates, including X.509 certificates, which help establish the identities of users, computers, and services.
Certificates can support authentication, encryption, and digital signatures. Certificate lifecycle management also includes renewal and revocation.
HSM (Hardware Security Module)
An HSM (Hardware Security Module) is a specialized, security-hardened device designed to generate, store, and protect cryptographic keys.
It can perform cryptographic operations such as encryption, decryption, digital signing, and key management within a protected hardware boundary. Depending on its design and certification, an HSM may provide tamper-resistant or tamper-responsive security features.
HSMs are commonly used in certificate authorities, financial systems, code signing, and other environments that require strong protection for cryptographic keys.
BeyondTrust
BeyondTrust provides Privileged Access Management (PAM) and identity security solutions. These products help organizations control, secure, and audit elevated access, including administrator privileges, privileged accounts, root credentials, and remote access to critical systems.
Examples of product capabilities include:
- Password Safe: Privileged account and session management, including credential protection and controlled access.
- Endpoint Privilege Management (EPM): Controls elevated privileges on endpoints and helps reduce unnecessary administrator access.
- Privileged Remote Access (PRA) and Remote Support: Secures privileged connections to systems and supports remote IT assistance.
- Identity Security Insights: Provides visibility into identity-related risks and privileged access, depending on the applicable product offering.
LaserVault
LaserVault provides data protection and storage management solutions, with a focus on specialized enterprise environments, including IBM Power Systems and IBM i (formerly AS/400 and iSeries).
Its solutions address backup, recovery, and data retention requirements for systems that may rely on established enterprise storage and tape-based workflows.
LaserVault serves a different set of use cases from general-purpose data protection platforms such as Veeam and Cohesity. Its relevance is particularly worth investigating when a job description mentions IBM i, AS/400, Power Systems, tape replacement, or legacy enterprise backup infrastructure.
These technologies illustrate the range of responsibilities that can appear in an infrastructure engineering or systems administration role, from endpoint management and monitoring to backup, storage, identity, and cryptographic security.
