TL;DR: Golden Paths provide developers with a recommended path through common engineering tasks by reducing cognitive load, providing guardrails, and preserving developer autonomy.

What are Golden Paths?

A Golden Path is an approach to implementing infrastructure and platform capabilities around four ideas: Path of Least Resistance, Reduced Cognitive Load, Guardrails over Gates, and Flexible Autonomy.

This can seem idealistic. There are, however, several key technical methodologies that can help us implement these ideas in practice.

1. Self-Service Templates: Developer fills out a form specifying the service name, language stack, and team owner. The system generates a new Git repository with language boilerplate, Dockerfile, linting, CI/CD pipelines, Kubernetes manifests, and code-ownership files pre-configured.

2. Infrastructure & Dependency Provisioning: Developer requests a database, message queue, or storage bucket for a specific application. The system executes IaC modules (e.g., OpenTofu or Terraform) behind the scenes, configures cloud network isolation, generates IAM policies, and injects secret references directly into the application namespace.

3. Ephemeral / Preview Environments: Developer creates a Pull Request or requests a temporary development environment. The system automatically spins up an isolated Kubernetes namespace or cloud environment, deploys the PR branch using GitOps, seeds test data, and returns a preview URL. The environment is torn down when the PR is closed.

4. Observability & Telemetry Onboarding: Developer enables default telemetry during service creation or through a portal toggle. The system configures OpenTelemetry collectors, registers metric scrapers, auto-generates Grafana dashboards, and creates baseline alerting rules connected to the team’s PagerDuty or Slack.

5. Day-2 Operational Control: Developer triggers routine operational actions from a single developer dashboard. The system executes safe, pre-approved actions such as database schema migrations, secret rotations, cache flushes, or immediate GitOps-driven rollbacks.
